Mary Brinson Spruill

Mary Brinson Spruill, 78, died Sunday, November 11, 2012, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.

She was a member of the Oriental United Methodist Church and a long-time member of the Dorcas Circle.

She grew up on a family farm in Arapahoe with seven brothers and sisters. She graduated from Pamlico County High School in 1952 and was an all-star basketball player, for which she was recently inducted into the Pamlico County Booster Club Hall of Fame. She retired from the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Department after 19 years of service.

Mary loved working in her yard, tending her flowers and spending time with her family. Her tremendous love for her family, church and friends was felt by all who knew her. She will be remembered as a wonderful and loving mother, sister, wife, and Granny.

Mary is survived by her three children, Al Spruill and wife, Karen; Wanda Forrest and husband, Chuck, and Cathy Dunbar and husband, Wayne; eight grandchildren, Kari Hammond and husband, Neil, Blake Dunbar and wife, Tiffany, Jenna Forrest and fiance’ Shion McIntosh, Lucas Dunbar, Dylan Dunbar, Ashton Spruill, Andrew Spruill and Justin Spruill; and great-grandchild, Drake Dunbar, all of Oriental. She is also survived by two brothers, George Brinson of Grantsboro and Roy Brinson of Reelsboro; and one sister, Carolyn Cox of Goldsboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alston Spruill; her parents, Jarvis and Bessie Brinson; two brothers, Robert and Leland Brinson; and two sisters, Ruby Evans and Edna Rice.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Bryant Funeral Home in Alliance. The family will receive friends at other times at the residence of Chuck and Wanda Forrest.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 14, at Oriental United Methodist Church with the Reverend Charles Mosley officiating. Interment will be in the Spruill Family Cemetery in Oriental.
