Jerry Morris, 77, died peacefully at home, Thursday, November 15, 2012.
Jerry was born in Vandemere on July 2, 1935 to Joseph & Ivy Woodard Morris. He graduated from Pamlico County High School. Following this, he played baseball with the NY Giants Farm League. He then returned and graduated from East Carolina University. He taught and coached at Hammond High School in northern Virginia until he returned home to Pamlico County where he was the PCHS athletic director, football and baseball coach. He then worked as a sporting goods manufacturer’s representative for Sondey Associates, eventually co-owning and retiring from this company.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Berry Jean Lynch and his sister, Josephine Driscoll.
He is survived by two daughters, Pam Barker and her husband, Mark, of Nashville, TN and Donna Anderson and her husband, Chuck, of New Bern; three grandchildren, Townley Cheek of Clinton, SC, Jordan Best of Chapel Hill and Brian Best of Raleigh; and his companion, Doris Southerland.
Jerry was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and golfing. He was an active member of Vandemere United Methodist Church and was very involved with fundraising for Relay for Life.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 18, at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Roach & Rev. Dave Brosnan officiating. Interment will follow immediately in Celestial Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends and family from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday evening at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial contributions be made to Vandemere United Methodist Church, PO Box 421, Vandemere, NC 28587.
