Gary Wayne Whorton, 69, of Bayboro passed away Monday, January 14, 2013, at home.
He was self-employed in farming construction. He previously served as superintendent for the Stonewall United Methodist Church and served 16 years on the Pamlico County Board of Education. He spent countless hours, month after month, with great dedication and love on the construction of the Jeff Cowell Memorial football field.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Annette Faye Whorton.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Whorton; his mother, Wilma S. Whorton of Florence; three sons, Kenny Whorton of Bayboro, Todd Whorton of Merritt and Mark Whorton of Merritt; granddaughter, Hallie Whorton of Bayboro; two brothers, Larry Whorton of Merritt and Kevin Whorton of Florence; four additional grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 16, at Stonewall United Methodist Church with the Rev. Penny Dollar Farmer and the Rev. Richard Baldwin officiating. Interment will follow immediately in Concord Memorial Gardens, Florence.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Bryant Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial contributions be made to Stonewall United Methodist Church, PO Box 183, Stonewall, NC 28583.
