Rodman Talmadge Spruill CHARLOTTE - Rodman Talmadge Spruill, 91, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on March 1, 2013. Mr. Spruill was born on October 27, 1921 in Oriental, NC, to the late Berlene Rollins Spruill and Jesse Talmadge Spruill. Mr. Spruill was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Cheering on the Tar Heels was a lifelong love of his but most especially in his later years. Mr. Spruill and his beloved wife, Marty, both natives of the small coastal town of Oriental, NC, lived for many years in Manhasset, NY, and Clinton, SC, where they worked and raised their family before moving to Charlotte, NC, in 1984. Rod had many strengths and talents but his strongest was his ability to connect with everyone he met and make them feel special. He loved meeting and talking with people and continued to do so as a resident of Sharon Towers for the past 9 years where he had many special friends. He spent over forty years in the textile industry. He worked for Acme-McCrary Hosiery and Hanes Hosiery in New York City. He was the President of Anderson Hosiery, a division of Collins & Aikman, in Clinton, SC, and the President of Chic Hosiery in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Spruill was very active in his church and the community. He was Chairman of the Board of Deacons for the Congregational Church of Manhasset, NY, and a member of the Presbyterian College Board of Visitors in Clinton, SC. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific Theater with the Army Air Forces. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Martha Harris Spruill. He is survived by his daughter Mackie Spruill of Oriental, NC; daughter Sarah Little and husband Tim of Charlotte, NC; son Rod Spruill, Jr. and wife Nancy of Greensboro, NC; and daughter Jane Ives and husband Frasier of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Claire Little, Harris Ives, and Hunter Ives of Charlotte, NC, Adam Little of Raleigh, NC, Michael Little of Chapel Hill, NC, and Stephen Spruill of Greensboro, NC. Mr. Spruill is also survived by two sisters, Jean Smith and Louise Miller. He was predeceased by two sisters, Lois Broughton and Elva Miller. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Mr. Spruill will be held at the Oriental United Methodist Church on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
