Horace Cowell Bennett, Sr., 89, of Grantsboro died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at home.
He was a member of Rock of Zion Original Free Will Baptist Church. He served in the Army Air Force in the South Pacific during WWII building airstrips in the 1881st Engineer Unit. He retired from Tideland, EMC after 30 years of service as a lineman. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8094. He enjoyed Army Air Force Reunions. He volunteered at Grantsbrook Nursing & Rehab Center and The Gardens of Pamlico. He put up a brave fight with cancer since 2004.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Sallie D. Bennett; two sons, Horace C. Bennett, Jr. of Clayton and Billy Bennett of Raleigh; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 4 at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Lewis officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial contributions be made to one’s favorite charity or the Grantsboro Cemetery Fund, 178 Old Bay River Rd., Grantsboro, NC 28529.
