Virgil Usher Lockey, Jr.

June 20, 1936 — August 14, 2013

Virgil Usher Lockey, Jr., 77, of Alliance died peacefully at home Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at home.

He was a member of Bayboro Masonic Lodge #331, Jacksonville Shrine Club, Keyston Cop, and past Governor of the Pamlico County Moose Lodge. He was raised at the Kennedy Home. He also transported crippled and burned children to the Shriner’s Childrens Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Lockey, four brothers, Cecil, Frank, Henry and John, and one sister, Lulu B. Reynolds.

He is survived by his son, Virgil U. Lockey, III and wife, Wendy, of Alliance; his daughter, Sina Zubia and husband, Paul, of Alliance; two sisters, Marie Purifoy of Houston, TX and Earlene Gaskins of New Bern; seven grandchildren, April, CJ, Danny, Mary, Christina, John Paul and Virgil IV all of Alliance; and 11 great-grandchildren; and his side-kick, Mario Zubia.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 17, at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lee Toler officiating. Interment will follow immediately in Cowell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday night at Bryant Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial contributions be made to Shriner’s Childrens Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607 or Kennedy Home, 2557 Cedar Dell Lane, Kinston, NC 28504.
