Thomas Victor Butkus died at home on December 30, 2013. He was born January 25, 1944. He was the oldest son of Alfred E. and Ann S. Butkus, now deceased.
He is survived by his wife, Theda Apperson Butkus; brothers, William Butkus of Melbourne, FL, Robert Butkus of Santa Rosa, CA, James Butkus (Jill) of Morristown, NJ; sisters, Barbara Beeson (John) of St. Joseph, MO, Janet Butkus (Rita) of Parkville, MO, Linda Butkus of Worcester, MA, nine nieces and nephews, and his brother-in-law, Frans Apperson (Mary Dillon) of Roanoke, Virginia.
He graduated from Coe College, Iowa in 1966 and Wichita State University in 1968. He retired from IBM in 2000 after 30 years of service in Human Resources. During his career he worked in Poughkeepsie, NY, RTP, NC, Chicago, IL, and multiple headquarters locations in Westchester County, NY.
Tom’s hobby was planning the many trips that he and Theda enjoyed before and after their retirement. He was an enthusiastic golfer, excellent bridge player, and a twelve-year member of the aerobics group at the Arapahoe United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Arapahoe United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 25, Arapahoe, NC 28510 or the charity of one’s choice. In keeping with Tom’s request, there will be no memorial service.
The family appreciates the special care Tom received from the staff at the New Bern Cancer Center and Continuum Home Care and Hospice.
