Fonnie Higgs, finished this life’s journey on April 4, 2014 at Grantsbrook Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Alliance.

She was born in Oriental on February 14, 1922, the eldest child of Claud and Emma McClees Edmundson. Fonnie graduated from Oriental High School, class of 1939 and briefly attended Louisburg College. She moved from Oriental during the early 1940’s and lived in the Norfolk, VA area where she met her future husband, Jack. They were wed on Christmas Eve 1946 at the courthouse in New Bern, NC and lived their early married life in the Washington, D.C. area where each of their three children were born. Jack, Fonnie and their daughter returned to live in Oriental in June, 1969.

Fonnie was predeceased by her devoted husband, of 51 years, Jack Clarke Higgs in 1998; and both sons, Robert Warren Higgs (Bobby) in 1959 and William Clarke Higgs (Bill) in 2008.

She is survived by a daughter, Fran Smith and husband, Philip, of Statesville, NC; two granddaughters, Cindi Ayala and husband, Sam, of Orlando, FL and Jenni Higgs, of Whiting, IN. She is further survived by her sister, Mattie Spencer of Florence, NC; a niece and five nephews. Also, longtime family friend and ‘adopted’ family member, Ricky Miller of Oriental.

A visitation will be held Sunday evening, April 6 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home.

A private burial is planned.
