Sidney Henderson Purvis, 77, of New Bern, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 18, 2015.
He was born in Jackson Springs, NC and raised in Martin County.
He graduated from Oak City High School and earned an A.S. degree from Presbyterian Junior College, an A.S. degree in Engineering Technology from Grantham College of Engineering and a B.S. degree in Industrial Management from NC Wesleyan College.
Sid began a career in Engineering with Carolina Telephone and Telegraph in 1957 and retired from Sprint with 44 years of service. He served as Sergeant in the US Army National Guard.
He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and taught the Good Stewards Sunday School class for 25 years. He was a member and past president of the East Carolina Engineers Club and NC Society of Engineers. He was a member of the NC Civil Air Patrol and held a private pilot license. With call #WA4VBC, Sid held an Advanced Class A Amateur Radio license and was a member of the New Bern Amateur Radio Club. He was also a charter member of the Twin River Corvette Club and a member of Hamilton Gun Club.
He is predeceased in death by his parents, Whit Coffield Purvis Sr. and Blyn Henderson Purvis and one brother, Whit C. Purvis, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Purvis of the home; one son, Matt Coffield Purvis and wife, Teshia of New Bern; three daughters, Lisa Purvis Boyette and husband, Kim of New Bern, Katie Powers Sparks and husband, Michael of Deerfield Beach, FL Julie Powers Dawson and husband, John of Cove City; two brothers, Bob Purvis and wife, Jean of TN, Phil Purvis and wife, Jan of TN; five grandchildren, Sydney Marie Purvis, Emily and James Sparks, Rachel and Georgia Dawson and cherished nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, August 21 at Tabernacle Baptist Church; with Dr. Scott Gleason officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Family Life Center.
Interment to follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
