Shirley Ann Daniels

Shirley Melton Daniels, 83, of Oriental passed away, Thursday, May 12, 2016, at CarolinaEast Medical Center. She was married to the love of her life, the late C.W. Daniels for 52 years.

She is survived by two sons, Charlie Daniels and wife, Wanda, of Smithfield, Va. and David Daniels and wife, Darlene, of Oriental; one daughter, Robin Goforth and husband, John, of Patrick Springs, Va.; seven grandchildren, Robert Wink Jr., Tiffany Daniels, Clifton Daniels, Jamie Wink, Jodi Goforth, Jennifer Taylor and Meagan Brantley; and six great-grandchildren, Ava Wink, Colton Wink, Doyle Taylor, Preston Taylor, Beckham and Brantley Brown.

Shirley had a 35 year distinguished career as a teacher and principal in the public and private school systems. She continued to tutor out of her home after her retirement.

At 72 years old she got a new lease on life through her involvement with Orphan Helpers. She worked tirelessly, energetically, fearlessly, and dedicated her life to creating libraries for the forgotten children of Central America in orphanages and juvenile detention centers.

Her legacy of love will live on through those libraries for many years through the impact of the books on the children that she loved so much.

Her funeral will be held 2 p.m., Monday, May 16th at Trent Free Will Baptist Church. Interment will follow immediately in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service at the church.

A memorial service will also be held Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 1:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, 10246 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, Virginia 23601. The family will receive friends and relatives from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the Pamlico County Historical Society, 10642 NC Hwy 55, Grantsboro, NC 28529 or Orphan Helpers Library Fund, 813 Forrest Dr. Suite A., Newport News, VA 23606.
