Betty Barnes Purser, 76, died peacefully surrounded by her family at her daughter’s home on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. She was born on January 29, 1940 in Cash Corner and was the daughter of William Andrew Barnes and Vera Potter Barnes Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald B. Purser; brothers, William A. “Bill” Barnes, Jr. and wife, Elizabeth K. “Libby” Barnes; Lendon E. Barnes; Frankie Barnes and wife, Barbara.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy S. Jones and husband, Doug, of Florence; her son, Andrew D. Scott and wife, Elaine, of Ernul; step-son, Donald G. Purser and wife, Bernie, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; step-daughters, Gwen Taylor and husband, Bobby, of Mt. Olive, Susie Gathercole of Greenville, NC; sisters-in-law, Priscilla Barnes of Grantsboro and Betty Barnes of Florida;brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Herb & Helen Purser of Grantsboro; 5 grandchildren, Wade Andrew Scott (Yvonne), Doug Jones (Sarah), Sherri Scott, Brandon Jones and Lauren Scott; 14 step-grandchildren to include, Christy Foreman, Robert Moore Jr., Joni Toler and Jessica Fillingame; 6 great-grandchildren; 18 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was a “people person” with an infectious smile. Everyone who met her loved her and throughout her thirty-five years’ service at Pamlico Medical Center, she touched the lives of many. She enjoyed helping others, cooking, and working in her yard. She was loved deeply by her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
She was a member of Bayboro Baptist Church and was active in the church as long as her health permitted.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Fitzgerald and Dr. Robert Cayton officiating. Burial will follow in the Sandhill Cemetery in Reelsboro.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Her family would like to thank Dr. Bonnie Goodwin, her staff, and the nurses in the chemo lab at Eastern Carolina Internal Medicine in Pollocksville for the medical care, compassion, and love shown to their mother during her illness. The family is also grateful for the help and support provided to them by Hospice of Pamlico County.
