Gertrude Long West

March 23, 1928 — October 18, 2016

Gertrude “Trudy” West left this earthly life to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 where a glorious celebration awaited her.

Trudy was born on March 23, 1928 in Devil’s Fork, West Virginia, yet lived the majority of her life in Pamlico County. She was the sixth child of Bessie and John Long and the sole survivor of the Long family. Trudy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert West, of 59 years. Her children are Jean Davenport of Cove City who lovingly cared for her during her time of need, Robert and Tina West of Cove City, Mary Cayton of New Bern, Woody and Tina West of New Bern, and Joyce and Garth Swimm of Bayboro. She leaves behind eight grandchildren who were a light in her life. Eleven great-grandchildren also carry on her legacy. She loved her family deeply.

Retiring from Hatteras Yachts in ’92 just gave her more time to devote to her cosmetology business and her love for gardening and flowers where her yard was usually a showplace. She did some volunteer work during these years and had time to enjoy her family.

Services will be held at Reelsboro Pentecostal Holiness Church on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Steve Willis opening the Celebration of Life Ceremony. Pastor Mary Cayton and Pastor Joyce Swimm will also officiate. Burial will be at Paul’s Cemetery in Silver Hill following the service.

Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.
