Teresa Muse Cooney, 63, of Bayboro, died May 2, 2017 at her home.
One of three children born to Carlton and Shirley Muse, she is preceded in death by her mother and brother, Carlton Jr.
Growing up, Teresa lived in Key West, Florida and in Bayboro, North Carolina. She attended UNC-CH where she met her husband, John, and earned a BA in Sociology/Psychology. Teresa later attended ECU where she studied Counselor Education and received a MS in School Counseling.
Teresa and John enjoyed a lifelong adventure pursuing Carolina Bliss. She was an avid Tar Heel fan and enjoyed following local athletics. Through her work as a Guidance Counselor in the public school system, she fulfilled her dream of helping others. She was highly regarded and respected by her coworkers and the students she served in several high schools in both Pamlico and Craven counties. Heartwarming are the testimonials from students, or her kids as she called them, who expressed invaluable help in providing life lessons and support for them through their journey in high school and beyond.
Teresa is fondly remembered for her love of her dogs, her humor and wit, and love for reading. She loved her family and considered her role as “mom” her most important and pleasurable one.
She is survived by her father, Carlton Muse, husband, John, sons, John III and Bryant, grandson, Miles, sister, Sue, sister-in-law, Debbie McCotter and nieces Carly and Chelsey.
Funeral arrangements are through Bryant Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be held at Bayboro United Methodist Church on May 8th at 2pm. The family will receive friends also at the Bayboro United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 7th from 5-6:30pm.
