Howard Osmond Troop, 87, husband of the late Patricia Ann Brinson Troop of
New Bern, passed away Friday, September 1, 2017 at his home in Pamlico
County.
He was born on May 20, 1930 in Peoria Heights, Illinois, the son of the late Luther E. Troop, Sr. and Gladys L. Troop. Mr. Troop graduated from
Pekin Community High School. While growing up in Illinois, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, acting in local community theatrical productions, singing and being in the Boy Scouts of America. While a Boy Scout he was awarded the Boy Scout’s "Gold Honor Medal for Life Saving" (the highest award of the Boy Scouts of America) in recognition of his "...gallant conduct in saving the life of Robert Boyd from drowning on June 20, 1946." Growing up, and in his early adult life, he enjoyed actively participating in sports as a Golden Gloves boxer, bowler, softball player and semi-pro football player.
After graduation from high school, Mr. Troop enlisted in the United States
Navy, and served for a total of 21 years. He retired in 1974 while living in Virginia Beach, Virginia as an “E-8” Senior Chief Petty Officer. During his active duty service he received many letters of commendation, promotions and additional responsibilities while proudly maintaining a spotless conduct record. Later in life he was known to proudly state that he had “…never gotten a tattoo and never been put on report for anything." Upon retiring from active duty, he worked with several defense contracting companies in the Tidewater area. He specialized in Quality Control and Management while supervising international teams of experts repairing and replacing electrical weapons and communications systems on US Navy warships.
Mr. Troop also found time to attend and graduate from Tidewater Community
College in 1981 after earning two Associates of Science degrees. One in
Business Administration and a second in General Studies while earning Magna
Cum Laude distinction in each one.
After retiring from all work, he spent the last years of his life in
Pamlico County watching the Carolina Panthers NFL team and NCAA women's college softball on television, reading, attending and volunteering for his church, telling stories, visiting friends at WalMart and Cherry Point, working around the house and yard, fishing, working (playing really) on computers, making tee-shirts for friends, sending gifts to grandchildren in other states, making fudge, mowing grass and fixing things for people he knew. He loved his dogs, especially Jasmine, Mandy and Teddy. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a licensed First-Class Radio Operator and proudly possessed an International Driving Permit.
