Alfred Darold Ulvog, Jr., 90, of Oriental, North Carolina died on his birthday, October 18, 2022. Born in Vermillion, South Dakota he served in the Korean conflict then went on to earn a BS degree in Accounting from the University of South Dakota, graduating with honors. Al had a long, successful career with the Department of Agriculture, first as a traveling auditor, then working in Chicago and Washington DC. He was awarded the Department’s Superior Service Award three times during his career. He retired in 1993 and headed to Oriental, North Carolina. He was fond of saying, “I wasn’t born here, but I came as quickly as I could!”
We will remember how his faith sustained him, he actively served all the churches he attended as an usher, council member, and council president. He spearheaded an ecumenical council of inter-denominational faith leaders, LARC. Al was also active in the Masonic Lodge for over 63 years. His other interests included fishing the Neuse River and a weekly game of golf.
But, if you asked Al, he would say his family was the dearest to him. His wife Joanne Johnson Ulvog, shared his life for over 60 years. Four children, Alfred David (Hiroko) of Okinawa, Japan, Anne Lucille (Neal) Jennings of Chesapeake, Virginia, Andrea Katherine “Katie” (Eric) Phipps of New Bern, North Carolina, and Allison Ulvog (Scott) Leverick of Haddonfield, New Jersey.
He dearly loved his 11 grandchildren: Grace Jennings, Daniel Leverick, Caroline Jennings, Lucas Leverick, Christina Ulvog, Jackson Jennings, Krister Ulvog, Alek Phipps, Annabelle Jennings, Abigail Leverick, and Emma Phipps.
He was the fifth of six children and preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Christina (Hansen) Ulvog; one sister, Catherine Anderson, and four brothers, Adrian, Howard and Robert Ulvog, and Marion Kryger. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other members of the Ulvog extended family.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 2pm Sunday, October 23, 2022 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Oriental, North Carolina. The interment will be at a later date in Vermillion, South Dakota. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Pamlico County; PO Box 6, 602 Main Street, Bayboro, North Carolina 28515.
