Anna Cartner Kafer

Anna Cartner Kafer, 85, formerly of New Bern, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025, at MacGregor Downs Health Center in Greenville, NC.

Born to the late William Joseph Cartner and Josephine Cable Cartner, Anna lived a life rooted in faith, service, and love for her family and community. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Kafer, III.

Anna was a faithful member of Garber Methodist Church as long as her health allowed. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother who placed family at the center of her life.

A passionate educator, Anna dedicated many years to teaching within the Craven County School System and later shared her nurturing spirit with young children while teaching preschool at Centenary Methodist Church. Her patience, wisdom, and encouragement left a lasting impression on countless students and families.

She is survived by her son, Oscar Kafer, IV and wife, Jennifer; her daughter, Helen Varnandoe and husband, Troy; and her cherished grandchildren, Susanna “Suzzi” Kafer and husband, Craig Skvoretz and William Kafer.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at New Bern Memorial Cemetery in New Bern, NC.
