Barbara Ann Chassé, age 79, resident of Oriental, North Carolina, died peacefully on Thursday, February 29th, at her home, with her husband and son at her side. She was born in New York City on March 23, 1944, to Frederick and Irene Gallagher Becker. She graduated from Massapequa High School and had a degree from New York State College at Farmingdale. She married Darian Chassé, (the love of her life) in 1967 and they started a family with their sons Matthew born in 1968 followed by Christopher in 1971 and Daniel in 1972.
She lived and worked most of her life in Merrick, New York. She was a small business owner and worked in Nassau County Clerks Office before retiring in 2009 and moving to Oriental, North Carolina.
She was outgoing and supportive of others, regularly volunteering with community organizations or at her church. She helped with ministries at Curé of Ars Church in Merrick and then St. Peter the Fisherman in Oriental. Organizing an annual church bake sale, and other ministries as requested. In addition, she volunteered at Hope Clinic and Pamlico County Hospice, as well as a member of several clubs. She enjoyed annual trips to Florida and Maine, and was able to visit Bermuda several times and Europe, Hawaii, East and West Coasts and the Carribean. Barbara had a passion for getting people together, always hosting gatherings of family and friends throughout the years in both New York and in North Carolina. She was fearless, always willing to speak up for what she believed in, and always willing to help others in need.
She is survived by her husband, Darian; her sons, Matthew (Diane) Chassé, Christopher (Marika) Chassé, and Daniel Chassé; and her grandchildren, Jaak Chassé, Krista Chassé, and Ella Chassé. She was preceded in death by her parents, several aunts and uncles.
A Funeral Mass Service will be held at St. Peter the Fisherman Church, 1149 White Farm Rd., Oriental, on Saturday, March 23rd at 11am. The family will receive friends in the chapel prior to the Mass from 9:45am – 10:45 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Barbara’s honor to Hospice of Pamlico County, Inc., P.O.Box 6, Bayboro, North Carolina 28515.
