Charles Warren Spruill, Jr., age 74, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on January 6, 2024.
Warren grew up in Oriental and went on to graduate from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton). He retired from his career as an auditor with NC Department of Revenue and spent most of his retirement back in his beloved Oriental in the home in which he grew up. He got reacquainted with old friends and had lunch every day at M&M’s making many new friends, who all looked after each other.
In addition to accounting, Warren worked briefly as a surveyor and was also talented at wood working. He liked playing the lottery for fun and enjoyed golf and sailing. He recently bought a small sailboat which he was restoring to give to his daughter, naming it after her – KLY, and was looking forward to a launch party and teaching her to sail. His good buddy Billy Creech has promised he will take the helm and make sure KLY is properly launched with Warren along for the sail and placed in the creek or the Neuse River. He was extremely proud of his daughter and always delighted to spend as much time with her as possible.
The two comments we have heard consistently concerning Warren’s passing are “he was one of a kind” and “he was always a dapper dresser”. He would appreciate both observations.
Warren was predeceased by his father, Charles Warren Spruill, his mother, Ruth Willie Bell Spruill and his favorite uncle and buddy, Frank Sterling Bell.
He is survived by his daughter, Kaylee Savanna Ruth Spruill; his sister and faithful caregiver, Mary Spruill Hott; his brother, Carl Hampton Spruill; and many nieces and nephews.
Rather than a traditional service, friends and family are invited to gather at M & M’s Restaurant in Oriental at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Desserts will be provided, and we encourage anyone so inclined to raise a glass of scotch in Warren’s memory.
