Charlie Gordon Cummings

August 2, 1926 — December 12, 2020

Charlie Gordon Cummings, 95, resident of Bayboro, passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Grantsbrook Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born on August 2, 1926 in Roanoke, Alabama to Wiley and Annie Cummings. He was a member of Stonewall United Methodist Church.

He served as a Seaman 1 st Class in the Navy enlisting in 1943 and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. Charlie made his way to Pamlico County on a shrimp boat, where he fell in love and made Pamlico his home. He worked as a commercial fisherman between Pamlico County and Key West, Florida for many years until he attended tugboat school and worked his way up to captain. He traveled around the world to many exotic places and enjoyed many adventures along the way. Oh, the stories. Once he retired from the sea, he tried his hand at the restaurant business, Charlies was his place.  This is where he loved to be. He loved all those who came in and all those who worked for him. He was in his element, the center of the county. This is where everyone would meet up to discuss the world’s problems as they saw it and offer solutions for whatever problems you might have. Having many nicknames, but mostly known by Capt. Charlie or Charlie Brown, so much that some folks thought Brown was his last name! After retiring from the restaurant business, he still spent many hours at the back table with all the locals, catching up. He loved spending time at the Braswell Coast House, drinking coffee and watching the sunset.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Shepherd Phillips.

He is survived by his love, Jean Braswell; daughter, Beth (Bobby) Baker; grandchildren: Joseph Rice, Blake Moore, Breanna (Steven) Jackson; Bobby (Crystal) Baker; Karen Baker; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Betty Phillips and many loved nieces and nephews.
