Clyde Earl Roberts, Sr., 82, of Oriental, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at his home. He is now reunited with his beloved wife of 35 years, Sylvia Ann Gilgo, whom he loved dearly and missed deeply.
Clyde was also preceded in death by his parents, Euette Martin Roberts and Sarah Margaret Stewart Roberts, and his siblings: Claudia Nelle Roberts Smith of Carthage, Murk Roberts of Broadway, and Dorothy Roberts Cummings of Sanford. Their memories will forever be cherished by his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Sheri Hale (Chris) of Kershaw, and his son, Clyde Earl Roberts, Jr. of Oriental. Clyde was also a very proud Papa to Kayla Cox (Dylan) of Newport, and Bryce Roberts of Stonewall. He is also survived by his brother Euette Martin Roberts, "Jr." and his baby sister Sandra Roberts Patterson (Ed), both of Broadway. Clyde also leaves behind many, many cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Born to Bill and Margaret Roberts in Broadway, North Carolina, on May 21, 1942. He was raised with a strong work ethic, a love for the outdoors and sports, and a deep faith in Jesus. He graduated from Boone Trail School in 1960 and continued his education at East Carolina University, graduating in 1964. Clyde began his career with Pamlico County Schools and this is when he met Sylvia. Clyde worked as a high school math teacher, coach, and driver’s education teacher. He spent countless hours teaching young drivers how to be safe on our roads.
His passions extended beyond the classroom; Clyde lived for the outdoors—hunting, fishing, and farming—taking full advantage of what the land around him offered. If you knew him, you knew he truly loved sports. He was an avid fan and his favorites were the Braves, through thick and thin, that light-blue college basketball team, his beloved ECU sports, golf, and NASCAR. They have all lost one of the biggest die-hard fans ever, but the love he had for sports lives on through his children and grandchildren.
We can’t leave out his favorite way to start the day, Brantley’s Breakfast Crew. While many of his friends have paved the way before him to the streets of gold, he leaves behind some dear friends Georgie, Tanya, and Paul. That seat at the table will never be filled by anyone who enjoyed their time together as much as he did with you guys.
The family will receive friends at the home on 1970 White Farm Road in Oriental. His Celebration of Life will be held at Lou Mac Park, in Oriental on Saturday, October 26th at 11am so bring a chair. A small, private graveside ceremony for family and close friends will be at 12:30 at the Oriental Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the PCHS School Fund 507 Anderson Drive Bayboro, N.C. 28515 or the Perry-Griffin Foundation P.O. Box 82 Oriental, N.C. 28571 in Clyde’s name.
