Daphne will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother and active member of her church and community. She was greatly appreciated by her family, by her church and by her many friends. Among the things we will miss about her are her loving heart, her ready smile, her adventurous spirit, her great cooking and her willingness to help a friend.
Daphne Beryl Lupton married (Luther) Carroll Yeomans on September 20, 1947. Over the years, as the family grew, they moved between North Carolina, Key West and Cocoa Beach, FL. Carroll was owner and captain of the shrimp boats "Del Ann" and "Miss Louise" and he followed the shrimp up and down the coast through the seasons. Daphne was often left to raise the children as best she could while Carroll wrangled a living from the sea. Such is the life of a fisherman's wife.
During the 1950's and 60's and into the 70's, Daphne routinely served as a Classroom Mother for each of her children as they went through school. She also sewed their clothes (and majorette uniforms) and drove them and their friends to and from practice many, many days. She also worked full time in Key West as secretary and office manager at SIRCO Marine and Stock Island Electric.
In the 1980's, Daphne went to adult learning and earned her high school diploma. In 1993 Daphne graduated magna cum laude with dual degrees in Business and Accounting at Pamlico Community College. After graduating, she was proud to serve as a longtime member of the Board of Trustees of PCC. She was also proud to serve as a leader and delegate in the NC Republican
Party.
She was accountant/bookkeeper at Muse Seafood for over 10 years, then for many more years was the Vandemere Town Clerk. During those years she was also a highly skilled cake decorator. She made and decorated many wedding cakes for family and friends, spending hours and hours in loving preparation. She loved raising a garden and keeping koi in her backyard ponds. Each year she canned figs from her own fig trees and shelled pecans from her own pecan trees.
Daphne was a longtime member of the Mt Zion Baptist Church, near Cash Corner, where she shared many cakes and hearty dishes - and recipes – at church functions and sang in the choir. Her reputation as a good cook was well known around this end of Pamlico County. She loved to see her family eating a good meal and always said, "When it comes to seafood, if it's not fried it's wasted!" There were a few exceptions, of course, like big pots of steamed oysters, served family style with everyone sitting on the floor and sharing in the love of good food...
