Ernest Walter Humphries, 84, of Pamlico County died peacefully at home on December 10, 2021, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Zamminer Henn and his father, Ernest Humphries.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Judy, with whom he shared 29 blessed years, two sons, Phillip Humphries of Dallas, Texas and Kenneth Humphries (Dawn) of Marshallberg, NC and three wonderful grandsons, Jesse and Sammy of Marshallberg, and Thomas (his mother, Allyson), of Dallas Texas. In addition to his own sons, he is survived by stepdaughters, Ashley Johnson (Jeremy) and Amanda Mehring (Robbie) of Pamlico County and their children, Noah and Wyatt (Ashley), and Shelby and Lila (Amanda).
Ernie found his way from Farmingdale, NY to Pamlico County via the U.S. Marine Corp in 1959. He loved everything about Eastern NC. He loved the weather, the water, and especially the people. Ultimately, he found his greatest experiences and rewards at Pamlico County High School. He spent 12 years coaching varsity football at Pamlico County High School, and it was here that he became known by many as “Coach”. On December 7, 2018, the Pamlico Hurricanes Booster Club presented him with the Hurricane Legacy Award which meant more to him than he could ever express. Ernie loved the game, but he loved his players much more.
Ernie was a very sensitive, gentle and kind man. He exemplified what it meant to be of a true gentleman. He faced the challenges of Parkinson’s Disease with tremendous grace with no self-pity or complaints. He took great pride in whatever he was doing, and his touch could be quickly recognized.
Ernie attended Reelsboro United Methodist Church and became known to fellow church member as “the Voice” after numerous years of narrating their production of Written in Red, a drama depicting the life of Jesus from birth to resurrection. He was truly blessed by this experience and considered it a high honor to be a part of this powerful outreach ministry.
His memorial service will be held 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 14 th at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Earl Sadler, Jr. officiating. A private inurnment will take place in Hollywood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
