Oriental

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eston “Sherrill” Styron, who died peacefully at CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, NC, on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born June 25, 1942, and raised with brothers C.H. and Clyde Styron in Hobucken, NC, Sherrill was a man of deep faith, unwavering character, and quiet strength. A loving husband, devoted father, and loyal brother and friend to many, he was also a respected businessman, accomplished outdoorsman, and a steadfast deacon at Oriental First Baptist Church. He served the town of Oriental faithfully for more than 20 years as both Mayor and Commissioner, leaving a lasting imprint on the community he loved. Above all, he was a visionary—a man whose life’s work helped shape his town and made it a home for so many.

Raised with humble beginnings and a tireless work ethic, Sherrill began his career as a teacher in Bayboro while shrimping during the summers to provide for his young family. Through years of dedication and integrity, he earned the trust of Garland F. Fulcher and went on to lead Garland F. Fulcher Seafood for more than 40 years. Alongside his beloved wife, Phyllis, and their sons, Jeff and Mike, he built not only a successful business but a legacy of service to others.

Sherrill’s love for “Carolina blue” was well known—from the waters of the Neuse to his unwavering support of the University of North Carolina. He and Phyllis were devoted Tar Heel fans, faithfully cheering from their seats in the Dean Dome and giving generously to the university, including funding a full scholarship for the women’s lacrosse program.

An avid hunter and gifted storyteller, Sherrill found great joy in the outdoors, with many cherished adventures in Alberta and across Africa. Yet his most treasured memories were those shared with others—especially his younger brother, Cecil Henry “C.H.” Styron, his longtime friend and guide Robert, and his lifelong friend Frank Alcock.

Sherrill will be remembered most for his generous spirit, steadfast faith, and the way he cared for others. He gave freely of his time and resources, offering encouragement, opportunity, and kindness to all who crossed his path. His life was a quiet example of service, humility, and love.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Darlene Harper Styron; sons, Jeffrey “Jeff” Allen Styron (Maria) and Michael “Mike” Glenn Styron (Chenoah); brothers, Cecil “C.H.” Henry Styron (Jewel) and Clyde Allen Styron (Judy); five grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends.

Just as he built a home filled with love and hospitality in Oriental, his family finds comfort in knowing he is now at peace in his Heavenly home.

A visitation will be held Friday, April 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home in Grantsboro. A memorial service will follow on Saturday, April 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Oriental First Baptist Church.
