After retiring from the North Carolina Education system, Jim continued his pursuit of history. He taught again at Pamlico Community College and the University of Mount Olive. He also authored several books about Portsmouth Island, the Civil War, and local history. Jim continued his passion for writing by becoming the editor of The Pamlico News. The North Carolina Society of Historians named him Historian of the Year in January 2023.
