Merritt

Julian Becton Broughton, Sr., 95, of Merritt, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Mr. Julian was a lifelong and faithful member of Trent Free Will Baptist Church for as long as his health allowed. He dedicated 43 years of service to the N.C. Dept. of Transportation, retiring as a Division Materials Inspector. His commitment to serving his community extended far beyond his career. He was a founding member of Pamlico County Rescue. He also volunteered with a group of Christian gentlemen who generously built wheelchair ramps throughout the community, asking nothing in return but the opportunity to help others.

Those who knew Mr. Julian will remember his warm smile, his love of reminiscing, and the countless conversations shared with friends. He never missed an opportunity to laugh, tell stories, and enjoy the fellowship of those around him. Above all, his greatest love was his family. He shared more than 70 years of marriage with his the love of his life, Helen Barbara Broughton, together they built a legacy of faith, love, and devotion.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Helen Barbara Broughton; his parents, Leona D. Broughton and Clyde Becton Broughton; six brothers; and one sister.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Becton (Netta), Gene (Joyce), Shirley (Mark), and Barbara (Doug); seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service to honor Mr. Julian’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 16th at Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home Chapel with private interment in Broughton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pamlico County Rescue, 911 Grace Daniels Rd. Bayboro, NC 28515.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Pamlico County Rescue for their exceptional care, assistance, and compassion over the years. They also offer their sincere appreciation to his devoted caregivers – Debra, Angela, Letise “Katz”, and Kelly – for the tremendous love, care, concern, and dignity they provided to their father throughout his journey.
