Marilyn Mason Sechrist

May 14, 1942 — October 7, 2024

Marilyn Mason Sechrist, 82 years old, passed away peacefully at Crystal Coast Hospice House and went home to be with the Lord on Monday October 7th, 2024.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Louise and Clifford Mason; her brother, Richard Mason; and her grandson, John Hourigan.

She is survived by her loving husband, George of New Bern; by her daughter, Michelle and husband, Robert McCarthy, of Greenville; and their children, Ryan, Reilly, Brittany, Sean, and Aidan; by her youngest daughter, Traci and husband, Timothy Hourigan, of Syracuse; and their children, Shannon and Joseph. She was also a loving great grandmother of her two great grandchildren.

Marilyn was born in Washington, DC in 1942, and raised in Arlington, VA. She went on to attend and graduate from The University of Connecticut in 1963 and remained a loyal Huskies fan. In the summer of 1968 she met her husband, George, in Skaneateles, NY and they were married soon after. They settled in Syracuse, NY where Marilyn was a devoted mother to her two daughters and also enjoyed working on the Syracuse Stage Guild. She worked for Syracuse University, managing the Anthropology Office, and loved interacting with the graduate students who were traveling the world. In 1997, after raising their two daughters, George and Marilyn left Syracuse and sailed 40 days to their new home in Oriental, NC. In 2018, she moved to New Bern, NC where she lived out the rest of her days boating, traveling, and cheering on the Huskies. However, her favorite thing by far was spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Planning for services and a celebration of life are incomplete at this time.

Many thanks to the 4100 group at Carolina East and to Crystal Coast Hospice House for all they did to keep her comfortable in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oriental United Methodist Church, PO Box 70, Oriental, NC 28571 or to Crystal Coast Hospice House, PO Box 640. Newport, NC 28570.
