MAY CARLGREN BANA 101, a Euclid native from early childhood, passed on August 11, 2023, nine days before her 102nd birthday.
Born to Gerda and Gustav Carlgren in Varmland, Sweden, came to the USA through Ellis Island at two. Known affectionately as the "Hug Lady," she lived a full, exciting life. Graduated from Euclid Shore in 1939, worked at Cleveland Public Library where she met the love of her life, Joseph Bana; attended Western Reserve University, graduating in 1945. During WWII, they wrote regularly, fell in love, and married, April 6, 1946.
As a mother of two children, she embarked on her life-long calling as a volunteer extraordinaire using her leadership skills in the organizations she loved. She helped start Girl Scout Troop 110; later became Vice President of the Lake Erie Girl Scout Council, honored with the highest volunteer award-the Thanks Badge; served as President of the PTA; President of the local Branch and Ohio President of AAUW. A life-long member of VASA, an active member of East Shore Church, she advocated for strong public schools and the continued advancement of women. AAUW named a Research and Program grant in her honor.
Beloved wife of the late Joseph J; dear mother of Lynne Fountain and Eric (Cindy); loving grandmother of Amanda Donges (Jorge Orlandini); great-grandmother of Olivia and Lydia Orlandini., she touched many lives and her voice will be missed.
A memorial service 11 am, October 7th, at East Shore Church United Methodist, 23002 Lakeshore Blvd, Euclid.
