Michael "Mike" E. Kefauver

August 26, 1960 — June 13, 2026

Merritt

Michael “Mike” E. Kefauver, 65, of Merritt, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2026, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.

Mike was a man of tremendous skill, integrity, and creativity whose hands and heart touched countless lives. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and a craftsman in every sense of the word.

Mike pursued his education with a passion for learning and excellence, completing studies in machine trades before obtaining two years of technical education in machining theory, practices, and methods. His dedication to precision and quality carried throughout his distinguished career. He spent 28 years with Fairchild Controls, serving as Quality Manager, before fulfilling a dream of owning his own construction business, Pamlico Design Build LLC, which he operated for three years. He later worked as Quality Manager with Sotera Defense Solutions and most recently devoted 11 years to Automated Merchandising Systems Inc. as Safety Director and Quality Manager.

During his time at Fairchild Controls, he was involved with several projects in conjunction with NASA, including the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite which was deployed from the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-48 in September of 1991 and the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite launch in August of 1992. He was proud of his involvement with each project, but the TOPEX mission was his crowning achievement with the company. He traveled to the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana (South America) and spent several weeks finalizing the quality assurance checks prior to the launch. He was the last human to touch the Satellite before it was sent into orbit where its ocean surface topography measurements and mappings provided oceanographers and climate scientists essential data which paid off almost immediately as it provided early information used to warn Florida officials of Hurricane Andrew just a few days after initial launch. He took great pride in his role that helped save lives.

He also designed and built his dream home on the river, as well as many other projects over the years including homes, sheds, woodshops, decks, furniture and other sculps of wood. In his later years he took up leatherworking as a hobby. As an avid autodidact, if he was interested in something he learned all he could and created masterpieces in his mind and built them. He even had his own wine distillery in his cellar in Keedysville.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mike was happiest creating, building, and exploring. He had a remarkable talent for carpentry, leatherworking, and lathe work, and he especially enjoyed home building and tackling projects that allowed him to bring ideas to life. He loved spending time on the water fishing, savoring fresh seafood, and seeking out new culinary experiences as a true foodie. Mike also cherished the freedom of the open road, traveling cross-country on his beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycle and making memories that would last a lifetime.

Mike treasured his family. He shared 25 years with his beloved wife, Kathy Kefauver; was a proud father to son, Bradley Kefauver (Kellie), and daughters, Brittany Jones (Travis) and Tiffany Good; cherished grandchildren, Jordan, Sydnie, Daniel and Aiden Kefauver and Madeline and Archer Jones; special cousins, Eric Kitchen (Shelly Rhoads) and Celeste Hornbecker (Curt); as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents, Thurman “Sammy” Eugene and Lucille Maude Kefauver.

A visitiation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 19th at Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home. An ice cream social celebrating Mike’s life will immediately follow at M& M’s Café in Oriental.

The family invites all who knew and loved Mike to join them in remembering a man whose life was built on love, hard work, adventure, and an enduring appreciation for the simple joys that make life meaningful.
