Michael John Nord

February 11, 1941 — November 2, 2023

Michael J. Nord, age 82, a long-time resident of the Oriental, North Carolina area, passed away on November 2, 2023.  He was born in Oregon and was one of two children born to Alice (nee Dahlgren) and Emil Nord.  After receiving his BA from Gustavus Adolphus College, he then earned his MA from University of Pittsburgh.

Always a free spirit, Mr. Nord had a varied career including employment with Social Security Administration; Bergen County Community College; and as a sea captain.  He was proud of his service with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves during the Kennedy era.  Additionally, during his retirement he devoted many hours volunteering in the recovery and re-entry field.

A passionate sailor, Mr. Nord was happiest when he was at sea and enjoyed regaling folks with tales of his adventures.  With his keen eye he captured many scenes through photography and artwork.  His work was featured in shops along coastal Carolina.  Mr. Nord also documented his love of the sea through words and poetry and published several items.   A true seaman, Mr. Nord lived for many years on his boat, the Rejuvenation; docking it at City Island in New York and later at Oriental, North Carolina.

Aside from the sea, his greatest joy was found while spending time with his only grandchild, Kelsey.  He was a devoted “Popeye” and never missed a reason to celebrate with her.

He is survived by his dear brother, Philip Nord; former spouse, Carolyn Parker (nee Hubsch); children, Andrew Hubsch (Vashti Ramsaroop); Linnea Parker (Josh Brookreson); beloved granddaughter, Kelsey Hogan; niece, Karin Nord; and nephew, Randy Nord (Jeanette).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Emil Nord; wife, Nora Nord; beloved sister-in-law, Carol Nord; and nephew, Robert Michael Nord.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., at Genito Presbyterian Church located at 2910 Genito Road, Powhatan, Virginia.  Immediately following the service there will be a reception with light refreshments and coffee arranged by the ladies of the congregation.  A private burial in West Virginia will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations are being accepted in Mr. Nord’s memory to the Baltimore International Seafarer’s Center and the Swedish Seamen’s Church of New York.

His family and loved ones wish Mr. Nord “Fair Winds and Following Seas.”
