Mrs. Norma Spruill Smith, age 94, of Oriental, NC died Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at Springbrook Nursing and Rehab in Clayton, NC after a long and arduous battle against Alzheimer’s.
In addition to her parents, Mr. Preston Carroll Spruill and Mrs. Mattie Hardison Spruill, she was predeceased by a brother, Mr. Alston Spruill, Sr., a sister, Mrs. Helen Spruill Benton, husband, Mr. Hubert H. Smith and infant son, Hubert Hearn Smith Jr.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Tingle, of Oriental, a son, James A. Smith of Clayton, NC, and 4 nieces and 3 nephews and their families.
Miss Norma, as she was affectionately called by those who knew her, was a member of the Oriental Women’s Club for 50 years, as well as a member of Oriental United Methodist Church for most of her life.
Miss Norma is often remembered as a teacher of first grade, for 17 years all told, at Alliance and Oriental Elementary Schools. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed golfing at Minnesott Beach as well as fishing in the Neuse River aboard the Neuse Queen, captained by Mrs. Betsy Thompson and mate, Helen Eubanks.
The funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church in Oriental at 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon with visitation at 1:00 PM prior to the service. Interment will be in Oriental Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity, church, or medical research group of your choice.
