Robert Vaughn Mendell

Robert Vaughn Mendell (Bob), 83, of Oriental, NC, passed away peacefully at home on April 16, 2024.

Bob was born January 6, 1941, in Morgan County, TN. His parents were Nova Lee Walls Mendell and William Henry Mendell. After graduating from Tuscola High School in 1959, Bob served in the United States Air Force for three years before attending Southern Illinois University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He held positions at various accounting firms before ending up at the FDIC where he worked until he retired in 2006.

In 1989, he married Suzanne Eustice of Soddy Daisy, TN. The two lived in Vienna, VA, and Orlando, FL, before moving to Oriental where they quickly integrated into the community, enjoying life on the water in a small town.

One of Bob’s favorite ways to spend time was on his Harley, hitting the road with friends in the Geezers club or solo. When he wasn’t riding his motorcycle, he loved sports cars, boating, watching the Indy 500 (many times in person), University of Tennessee football, the Chicago Cubs and Bears and all kinds of seafood. Bob was baptized at Woodmont Baptist Church.

Bob was predeceased by his mother, Nova Lee Mendell and father, William Henry Mendell. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Mendell; brother, Joe Mendell; sister, Jan Welch; son, Chris Mendell; daughter-in-law, Shea Mendell; granddaughters, Macey James Mendell, Kate Mendell and Wynter Henke; grandson-in-law, Adam Henke; and great grandchildren, Luna Henke, Zoey Mendell and Zayn Mendell.
