With great sorrow we announce the passing of Robert Earl Powers, known as Bob, on August 23, 2022. Bob was born in New Bern on August 7, 1940, to the late Sadie Hancock and the late Carl R. Powers, Sr.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy Louise “Dot” Ward; children, Catherine Powers (Tom) and Robert Powers, Jr. (Claudia); grandchildren, Laura Merten, Eric Merten, Edward Powers, and Emma Powers; brother, Carl Powers, Jr. (Barbara); sister, Julia Bland (Jeff); and many nieces and nephews.
Bob is remembered for his fun-loving spirit, making friends everywhere he went, and his love of travel, boats, and fishing. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force with 20 years of service, Bob went on to work as an aircraft mechanic at Cherry Point Marine Base for 13 years, and then as a veteran’s officer for the Craven County Employment Security Commission and a Veterans Service Officer in Pamlico County for several more years. Bob was a long-serving member of the Mt. Vernon Lodge #359 A.F. & A.M. of North Carolina, Sudan Shriners and Scottish Rites, as well as a member of several RV travel clubs. Bob’s legendary skill of cooking barbeque ribs, potato salad and country sausage and biscuits live on with his children and grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Lakeside Chapel at Greenleaf Memorial Park, 900 River Road, New Bern at 11:00 am on Friday, August 26, 2022.
