Rose Marie (Ronnie) was born in Lackawanna, NY. She was one of four daughters born to Michael and Antionette Perno. A gifted student, Ronnie graduated from high school in only three years. She married Howard P. Gates while he was serving in the Air Force. Together they enjoyed extensive travel.

While raising their three children, Ronnie attended State University of New York Fredonia where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Master’s degree in English Literature. She went on to teach English in the Frontier Central School District and ultimately became head of the English Department.

Ronnie loved cooking, gardening, fishing, and camping on their land in Northern Canada. After relocating to Oriental, NC she often tutored students in Pamlico County and was active in the Oriental Women’s Club where she served as President.

Howard and Ronnie remained married until Howard’s passing in 2014. She is survived by her three children, William, Valerie, and Howard; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren; as well as her younger sister, Barbara Jacobs.

A service will be held at Oriental First Baptist Church on Saturday, July 29th at 11:00 AM.
