On September 02, 2022 at 8:25am at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern NC Capt. Roy West Pittman Sr. joined his father, John Henry “Johnny” Pittman, his mother, Dora Purifoy Pittman, and his sisters, Joy Pittman Henry and Faye Pittman Williamson in heaven. He would have been 83 on November 14 th .
Roy was born in Edenton, NC and spent the majority of his youth in Oriental, NC. Roy graduated Pamlico County High School as Salutatorian and in the summer of 1958, along with his cousin and lifelong friend Dallas, enlisted into the United States Navy thus beginning a dedicated, lifelong commitment to serving his country, community, church and family.
In April of 1962 Roy met and married his best friend and fervent partner in life; Rachel Lois Ellington Pittman. Together they raised 2 children; Roy West Pittman Jr (Darlene Hewitt Pittman) and Kimberly Lois Pittman.
Following Roy’s Honorable discharge from the US NAVY in 1967 he went back to his roots and spent time working on a shrimp trawler with his Brother in Law, Wade, in the Gulf of Mexico. Roy and Rachel returned to Oriental and after a brief stint on a tug boat he started a job at Weyerhaeuser. This escalated quickly to being part of the OSHA training program as well as the emergency response team. All while working this more than full time job on rotating shifts, Roy continued to serve his community and church. He spent over 30 years as a volunteer fire fighter, 15 years as a volunteer paramedic, decades as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, member of the “Caring Carpenters” and Deacon. Roy retired after a 30 year decorated career with Weyerhaeuser as a Senior Project Analyst. But his multifaceted career did not end there, Roy continued to follow his passion and started teaching. Roy created and taught the United States Coast Guard approved courses: OUPV (6pac), 100T Master and Towing Endorsement at his home school PT-1 Charters & Training, Pamlico Community College, Carteret Community College as well as multiple Coast Guard facilities and Camp Lejeune.
These attributes, while impressive, are of little comparison to the provider and father Roy was to his family. A loving and respectful husband to his wife, Rachel and an ever present and supportive father to his children. For Roy, there was no try, there was only do. Whatever was needed was done, without hesitation, without question, without complaint but with love.
Service will be held at the Oriental First Baptist Church at 11am on Wednesday, September 7, 2022.
