Shirley Dean Powell Rogers was born May 10,1938 in Shaw, MS. She passed on to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 1 at the age of 86.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Rogers, Jr., mother, Modene Powell, and father, Aubrey Powell. She is survived by her daughter, Alison Castellucci (John) of Durham, NC and son Mark Rogers (Monica) of New Bern, NC. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Bryan, Kristen, Michael, Joshua, Matthew, Andrew, Nathan, John Mark, and Benjamin as well as by eight great-grandchildren, Anthony, Dominique, Gabriel, John, Thomas, Atlas, Renee, and Violet.
Shirley loved to work in her yard, as evidenced by the many beautiful flowers that were the subject of her tireless attention and care. She also had a deep love for animals as evidenced by her care for the many cats and dogs that came to make their home with her over the years at 3289 River Road in Sampson County. As a homemaker, she was a great help to her husband, Fred, both around the house as well as out in the fields where she supported him in his part-time farming operation. She loved her friends, especially those who were less fortunate than her, and was always sure to extend a listening ear and heart of compassion to them. Last but certainly not least, was her devotion to her family. Shirley was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is greatly loved and will be missed by all. The family has great hope at this time, through Christ, that she is at home with her Lord and the loved ones who went on before her. This knowledge is a great source of comfort during this time of loss. The family wants to express great appreciation for the love, prayers, and support extended to us during the time of Shirley’s illness as well as in her passing.
