Thomas “Tommy” Woodrow Boyd, died at home Friday, March 19. He was 82.
Tommy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a great friend to many. He was a gentleman, and his easy-going charm always put people at ease. He knew what was important in life, and he never did sweat the small stuff.
Above all, Tommy loved and cared for his family. Tommy’s wanderlust took him to all 50 states on his bike or in his “bus”, but his favorite route was the one he and Betty frequently took to Delaware to see his granddaughters.
Tommy was a faithful member of the Masons since 1969. He was twice Master of the Arapahoe Rainbow Lodge #479 in 1984 and 1988. After becoming a Shriner, he joined the Sudan Patrol where he served as Captain. He was elected to the Board of Trustees and then to the Divan. He served as Director of the Royal Order of Jesters, New Bern Court #145 in 2004. Ultimately, he held the honor of serving as Potentate of the Sudan Temple in 2005. As a Shriner, Tommy supported Shriners Hospitals for Children, made life-long friends, and always had fun along the way.
Tommy began his career with Nationwide Insurance in Bayboro, NC, in 1970. He was well known for his calm and cool demeanor, which helped make him a respected, trusted, and successful insurance agent in Pamlico County for 41 years until his retirement.
He served as an assistant on the Pamlico County Rescue Squad, and later on their Board of Directors. He also served as president and treasurer of the Minnesott Beach Golf & Country Club.
He is preceded in death by his father, Woodrow E. Boyd; his mother, Helen B. Boyd; his brothers, Jacky and Robert “Bobby” Boyd; and his infant daughter, Jacqueline Dawn Boyd.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty; his son and daughter-in-law, Woody and Robin Boyd of Delaware; his granddaughters, Marina and Cassidy Boyd; and his sister, Mary Helen Whorton of Arapahoe.
Services will be held at Greenleaf Memorial Park Lakeside Chapel, 900 River Road, New Bern, NC, on Saturday, March 27 th at 1 p.m. The family requests that attendees of the service wear face masks and practice social distancing to ensure the safety of all.
