Timothy "Doc" Gray Carawan

December 30, 1951 — May 25, 2026

New Bern

Timothy Gray Carawan, D.D.S., P.A., 74, of Grantsboro passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026, at Pruitt Health-Neuse in New Bern, NC.

Tim dedicated his life to caring for others, both through his profession and through the many ways he served his community. In 1977, he opened his dental practice, T.G. Carawan D.D.S., P.A., where he faithfully served generations of families for as long as his health allowed.

A proud graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Tim earned his doctorate in dentistry and remained an avid Tar Heel fan throughout his life. He was especially honored to have been the second Morehead Scholar from Pamlico County, an achievement that reflected his dedication, intelligence, and strong work ethic.

Outside of his profession, Tim found great joy in mentoring and supporting young people in his community. He loved coaching Little League baseball and assisting with high school baseball, sharing both his knowledge of the game and encouragement with countless players over the years. For more than 20 years, he also faithfully served as videographer for the Pamlico County High School football games.

Tim deeply loved the outdoors and treasured every opportunity to hunt and fish. Whether duck hunting, bird hunting, deer hunting, or spending time on the water fishing, he was happiest surrounded by nature and the people he loved most. To his patients and the community, he was known as “Doc”, and to his grandchildren, he was affectionately called “Papa Doc”.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Millie Carawan; his great-grandchild, Brooks Salter; and his beloved companion, Mickey Dog.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Terri Salter (Bryan), Chris Carawan (Lauren Holly), and Brian Carawan; the mother of his children and dear friend, Joy Carawan Baker; grandchildren, Bryce (Kenlee), Faith, and Brandon Salter and Kiera Carawan; great-grandchildren, Charlie and Carson Salter; and his loyal work family, Patrica Varley and Debbie Arnold.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 31st at Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home Chapel. Pamlico Hurricane or Tar Heel attire is encouraged. Interment will be held privately in Lee Family Cemetery. The funeral will be lived-streamed on his obituary page through Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home website on the day of the service and remain there for 90 days.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial contributions be made to Pamlico County Booster Club, 601 Main St. Bayboro, NC 28515.
