William David Smith, a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, and friend was born on February 15, 1949, in New Bern, NC and passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2026. He was the treasured son of William and (Mary) Evelyn Smith, who have since passed on.
Growing up in Craven County, David attended New Bern High School in the mid 1960s. Although he left high school early, David was determined to complete his education and earned his GED, also in Craven County.
In 1967, David answered the call to serve his country by joining the National Guard, where he dedicated six years of his life protecting and serving with honor until 1973. This period instilled in him a deep sense of duty and patriotism that remained with him throughout his life.
David pursued a career as a mechanic, a role that perfectly suited his love for tinkering and problem-solving. He spent many years working at both the New Bern Country Club and the Emerald Golf club as a mechanic.
David was known for his quick wit and mischievous smile. His family and friends could always count on him for an appropriate comeback delivered with warmth and humor.
An avid fisherman, David relished every opportunity to cast a line in pursuit of the “big one.” Whether alone or in the company of family and friends or his dog, Snip, he found solace and joy in nature’s embrace.
David’s life was enriched by the love of his family, including his sister, Linda Smith, who was not only his sibling but also his companion in worship at their home church. He was a dear uncle to Cathy Jones, Teresa Jones, and Karen Jones, and great-uncle to Savannah and Parker Jones.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Pruitt Health Hospice for their compassionate care and support provided. Their kindness and professionalism made a profound difference, and for that, we are deeply grateful.
David’s memory will forever be cherished by those who knew him, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. He died peacefully in the home of his uncle Kenneth Smith in Stonewall, NC.
The funeral will be a simple family graveside service at the Joe Morris Family Cemetery near Vanceboro.
