William Michael Gates

William “Bill” Michael Gates, 77, of Oriental, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at home.

Bill was a faithful member of Oriental First Baptist Church. He lived a full and active life, enjoying boating, fishing, riding motorcycles, and cooking. He had a special talent for baking bread, which he loved to share with family and friends. A graduate of the University of Buffalo, Bill earned his bachelor’s degree and was a proud and loyal Bills fan throughout his life.

Professionally, Bill dedicated many years as a real estate broker, building relationships and helping others find a place to call home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Rose Gates; his sister, Valerie Gates; and his beloved wife of 49 years, Janice Gates.

Bill is survived by sons, William Justin Gates (Kaylee) and Michael Louis Gates; daughter, Denise Marie Gates; brother, Howard Gates (Nancy); and four beloved grandchildren, Lyra Gates, Annabelle Gates, Brandon Jock (Olivia), and Jaden Jock.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at Oriental First Baptist Church on Saturday, November 8th at 10:00 A.M. 

As an expression of sympathy, the family suggested memorial donations be directed to Hospice of Pamlico, PO Box 6, Bayboro, NC 28515 in Bill’s memory.
