Wilma Sanders Whorton died peacefully on Sunday, October 30. She was 98 years old.
Wilma lived her entire adult life in the Florence community of Pamlico County. In 1942, she married S.G. Whorton and together they raised three sons: Gary, Larry, and Kevin. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, and she was dearly loved by her three boys. Wilma had a light-hearted wit, and she loved a good joke. She also possessed a strength that allowed her to adapt and survive so many of life’s challenges. Her resilience was tested when she buried each of her sons. This proved to be her hardest cross to bear.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Helen “Duck” Whorton of Arapahoe; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, S.G. Whorton; her three sons, Gary Whorton of Bayboro, Larry Whorton of Arapahoe, and Kevin Whorton of Florence; and her granddaughter, Annette Whorton of Bayboro.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 4, at 11 a.m. at Concord Memorial Gardens in Florence.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Pamlico, P.O. Box 6, Bayboro, NC 28515.
